Toppers score 19 unanswered to thwart Daniel Boone upset

Staff Reports

Daniel Boone jumped out to a 14-0 lead at halftime against Science Hill, however the Blazers were unable to find the end zone again as they fell 19-14 to the Toppers.

The first score for the Blazers came when Noah Shelton found Duncan Buchanan from 11 yards out with just under seven minutes off the clock in the first quarter. Shelton added to that with 2:20 remaining in the half when he snuck in from a yard out.

Charlie Cole finished with 23 carries for 118 yards.

Shelton was knocked out of the contest with 6:23 remaining in the third quarter after a hit by Science Hill linebacker Bryson Tolley. Shelton did not return and finished the contest with seven carries for 66 yards.

“We kind of did what we could there for a quarter and a half. Any time you get your big gun out of there – it’s happened to us the two games we’ve lost,” Daniel Boone coach Jeremy Jenkins told Trey Williams.
“Our kids’ effort was great. We can’t let this kind of make you feel sorry for yourself: ‘Well, we should’ve, would’ve, could’ve.’ You know, we didn’t. So we’ve gotta let that fuel us for the next week.”

Daniel Boone won the ground game, rushing the ball 52 times for 246 yards, while Science Hill ran 38 times for 160 yards. The Blazers put the ball in the air 12 times, completing four, but getting picked off twice. Both of those interceptions came from Science Hill’s Colby Martin. DBHS out gained Science Hill 270-211 in total offense.
