Teams hit halfway mark with wins, losses

The approaching holiday season not only brings tournament action for local teams David Crockett and Daniel Boone, it also marks a rough halfway point to the 2014 high school basketball season.
Prior to a short break for Christmas, the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams of Crockett and Boone took to the hardwood last week as the Pioneer boys closed out the first half of their season with a win over Greeneville to improve their overall record to a perfect 13-0.
Despite having already met Greeneville once this season in the Hardee’s Classic championship game, which Crockett won 60-46, the Pioneers faced a bigger test against an improved team this time around.
In the Dec. 16 contest, the Patrick Good-led Pioneers held on for an 81-72 win over Greeneville to mark their best start in school history.
The win opens a 10-day break for Crockett who will not return to action until Friday, Dec. 26, in the Arby’s Classic, where they will play Georgia’s North Gwinnett High School in their opening contest.
In other action last week, Daniel Boone Trailblazers dropped their only contest of the week to Morristown East 65-48 on Dec. 16.
The loss sets the Blazers at 4-8 overall with a 1-1 record in the conference.
In last week’s girls action, the Lady Blazers took on a full slate of games with an early week-thriller against Morristown East on Dec. 16 before taking part in the Doc Maples Holiday Hoops tournament at Tennessee High.
Boone fell to East in an overtime heartbreaker 51-50, but rebounded from the loss on Dec. 18 with a tournament opening win over Gate City, 40-34.
On Dec. 19, the Lady Blazers continued tournament play, dropping to Sullivan East in another close contest, 44-42.
Boone wrapped up tournament play on Dec. 20 with a consolation win in the championship portion of the bracket with a 65-38 win over Honaker.
The Lady Blazers will head to Christmas break with a 5-7 overall record and a 2-2 mark in the Big 7.
In Greeneville, the Lady Pioneers lost their only contest of the week, falling 78-52 to the Lady Green Devils on Dec. 16.
Crockett has now dropped to 5-7 on the season, but maintains a winning record in the conference at 3-2.
