Special graduation held for Boone softball seniors

Members of the Washington County Board of Education hosted a separate graduation ceremony June 7 for the six Daniel Boone High School seniors who were in Murfreesboro competing in the state softball tournament and unable to join their classmates at the May 26 schoolwide commencement ceremony.
Jennine Duncan, Andrea Rogers, Natalie Sheffey, Kayla Smith, Kellie Waycaster and Jessie Wheelock received their diplomas during a first-ever high school graduation in the Central Office.
The event highlighted the players’ academic achievements as well as their athletic accomplishments.
Special mention was made of the young women’s recognition by TSSAA Executive Director Bernard Childress for their sportsmanship and conduct during the tournament.
“He said in his 17 years, he has never spoken to a ball team, but he wanted to take the time to tell them he thought they were a class act,” Director of Schools Ron Dykes said.
According to Dykes, Childress praised the players — and their parents for the fine examples they set — describing them as a breath of fresh air for high school athletics.
