Pioneers spark late, Lady Blazers start early as Crockett and Boone split

By Collin Brooks

A tight contest was blown open by a 23-2 run by David Crockett in the final period, which helped the Pioneers take a 70-53 victory at Daniel Boone on Tuesday night.

A 47-45 contest going into the fourth quarter seemed like it would play into the home team’s favor, but that was all forgotten after Patrick Good delivered two free throws, followed by an and-one by Peyton Ford six seconds later sparked the run.

“They are so good, that when they turn you over, they make you pay on the other side,” Daniel Boone coach Chris Brown said.

Patrick Good led all scorers with 20 points while also tallying eight assists. Brendan Coleman finished with 14 points and eight rebounds. Alex Percell led Boone with 18 points and Evan Scanlan capped the game off with 15 points.

Scanlan knocked down an old fashioned 3-point play with three minutes remaining in the third period that allowed Boone to take a 43-42 to lead. But Crockett’s Ian Martin went on a 5-2 run for Crockett to close out the third period and give his team a 47-45 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Crockett seemed to come out a bit sluggish the first three quarters after an impressive Arby’s Classic run.

“We knew that coach Brown would have them prepared, he always does,” David Crockett coach John Good said. “They had a great tournament in Florida which gave them a lot of confidence and their kids were playing well and everybody is telling us how great we are and there are times when you have to block that out and play the game.”

That seemed to be what Crockett did from the start of the fourth quarter

“We just came out sluggish and we needed someone to spark us and give us some energy,” said Coleman, who brought the crowd to their feet with two electric dunks in the contest. “We just didn’t come out to play tonight at first.”

David Crockett will take the court again on Friday when they host Sullivan Central, while Daniel Boone will play at Elizabethton on Saturday.

Four Lady Blazers scored in double figures to help Daniel Boone take a 90-36 victory over David Crockett. But it was no secret that the home team had extra fuel because Crockett ended the Lady Blazers season last year.

“They had this game circled, we knocked them out of district last year and I told our girls, ‘they are going to come gunning for you’ and why would they not, they wanted to make us pay,” David Crockett coach Marty Story said.

Revenge was admittedly on the mind of Daniel Boone coach Travis Mains, who simply said with a smile, “Those kids really wanted to win.

“The kids are skilled and when they play hard we are a pretty good team, but when they don’t play up to their ability we are pretty average,” he continued. “So we got after it…and I am proud of them, they showed good effort.”

Once the Lady Pioneers took a 5-2 lead, something clicked for Daniel Boone as they closed the quarter on a 26-0 run to take a 28-5 lead into the second quarter.

Boone was led by senior Jaclyn Jenkins with 20 points, followed by Macie Culbertson and Sydney Pearce with 16 a piece and Kaitlyn Harville with 10.

David Crockett received 14 points from Lily Ayers, while Chelsey Ford scored nine points.
