Pioneers beat Blazers 15-11 in baseball showdown

The Pioneers of David Crockett High School and Trailblazers of Daniel Boone High School have navigated two different paths this season.
Experience has helped guide the Blazers to the middle of the pack in the Big 8, while the young Pioneers have struggled to remain relevant in the conference.
Their paths converged in Gray on April 3 as the rivalry of Washington County renewed on the baseball diamond.
The game remained true to classic Pioneer-Blazer matchups, with the outcome an uncertainty until the very end.
This time it was Crockett coming out on top, with a comeback giving the Pioneers an upset victory, 15-11.
Crockett sent Isaac Barkley to the mound to start the game while Boone chose their ace Daniel Wagner to combat the Pioneer bats.
After a scoreless first inning, the Blazers opened up a flurry of runs in the home half of the second inning, pushing four runs across the plate.
The biggest hit of the inning came from Boone’s Cameron Clabough on a two-run round tripper.
Crockett struck for a run in the top of the third, but Boone looked on the verge of putting the Pioneers away, scoring three more runs in the home half of the inning.
In the fourth, the Pioneer bats came alive. Crockett finished the inning with four runs to cut the Boone lead to 7-5.
Boone pushed the lead back to four later in the inning after scoring two runs.
But Crockett responded in the fifth with their biggest scoring output of the day, finishing with seven runs in the inning to capture a 12-9 lead.
The Pioneers scored three more runs over the final two innings for a 15 run total, while the Blazers rally in the bottom of the seventh fell short after only two runners crossed the plate.
The winning Pioneers scored 15 runs on 14 hits and committed no errors in the field. Boone finished with 11 runs on 16 hits but helped the Pioneer offense out by committing three errors during the contest.
Austin Casey led the Pioneers with five RBIs and Troy White finished with three.
For the Blazers, Taylor Smith and Josh Bacon each finished with three RBIs.
The Pioneers used four pitchers in the contest and the Blazers used five. Crockett’s Heath Ricker was credited with the win, while Boone’s Mason Pugh received the loss.
The win gave Crockett their second victory in the conference as they moved just a spot behind Daniel Boone in the Big 8 who sits in fifth.
The Pioneers took part in the Maryville Daily Times Classic over the weekend where they dropped all three contests.
Crockett lost to Seymour 11-3, fell to Alcoa 4-1 and finished the Classic with a 9-1 loss to South Doyle. Austin Casey, Ryan Burger and Jeremy Collins all took losses for the Pioneers.
Barkley and White led the Pioneer offense in the Classic. Barkley finished with five hits and White drove in two runs. Crockett is now 4-11 on the season.
