Lady Pioneers fall to Boone, beat the ‘Hill’

With the regular season grinding to an end, the Lady Pioneers of David Crockett finally captured the signature win that had eluded them for much of the season.
Playing in Johnson City against Science Hill on April 24, the Lady Pioneers shutout the Hilltoppers 4-0 for their fifth conference victory of the season.
With Haley Grindstaff going the distance in the circle, the Hilltoppers were limited to just four hits throughout the contest.
Crockett added an early cushion in the first inning, scoring three runs to open the first frame. The Pioneers added a single run in the third inning and finished the contest with 12 total hits.
Madison Grindstaff, Kelli Hooks, and Maddie Tarlton guided the Pioneers’ bats, as each put together a multi-hit effort in the game.
Preceding the Lady Pioneers big win, Crockett opened their weekly slate on April 21 against rival Lady Blazers of Daniel Boone.
The final meeting between the two teams took place in Gray, pitting Crockett pitcher Haley Grindstaff against Boone’s Jaclyn Jenkins.
After a scoreless first inning for the rivals, the Lady Pioneers led off the top of the second with the first run of the contest, but Boone pushed two of their own across the plate in the home-half of the frame.
The game remained 2-1 until the fourth inning when the Lady Pioneers took the lead back with two runs.
The Blazers added a run in the fifth to tie the game at 3, but the Lady Pioneers took the lead back in the top of the seventh, 4-3.
But Boone rallied in their last at bat of the contest, with a Jenkins one-out single to drive in the tying and winning run.
Crockett’s Samantha Fox homered in one of her two hits to lead the Pioneer bats and Boone’s Allison Littleton finished her day at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort.
A day after their matchup, the Lady Pioneers and Lady Blazers both captured conference wins with Boone outlasting Science Hill 2-1 and Crockett blasting Sullivan Central 13-1.
While Crockett closed out their conference schedule with a win over Science Hill, the Lady Blazers completed their season slate in the conference on April 24 with a 12-0 win over Dobyns-Bennett.
The strong finish pushed Crockett to fourth place in the Big 7 with a 6-6 record, and they will enter the district tournament playing their best ball of the season.
The Lady Blazers finish 10-2 in the conference, second place behind Volunteer.
