Lady Pioneers fall in region, season ends

The Lady Pioneers of David Crockett traveled to Morristown West on Monday night tipping off the start of the Region 1-AAA tournament.
Despite battling against one of the region’s top teams for the better part of four quarters, the Lady Pioneers faded down the stretch, eventually falling to a final score of 73-51.
Morristown West built a 15-10 first quarter lead and extended their advantage in the second, but three Crockett three-pointers kept the contest within reach at intermission with the Pioneers trailing 30-19.
The second half would see West pull away from the Pioneers, taking full control of the contest by the end of the third quarter where they had built a 20-point lead.
Crockett would make a final run in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit down to 15 points at the three minute mark, but the last push wouldn’t be enough as West capped off the win in the final minutes.
Crockett hit nine three-pointers in the game and was led by Kasey Gordon who finished with a team-high 10 points. Lily Ayers and Chelsea Lyninger chipped in for nine points each.
With the win Morristown West improved to 28-4 on the season and will face Dobyns-Bennett in the second round of the regional bracket.
The loss ends the Lady Pioneer season. Crockett finishes the 2014-15 season with a deceiving 10-20 overall record. Deceiving, because Crockett was much better than their record indicates.
After years of struggling in and out of the conference, the Lady Pioneers put it all together under first-year Head Coach Marty Story.
That included a fourth place finish in the Big 7, two wins over rival Daniel Boone, a district tournament win, and their first region appearance in 18 years.
It was indeed a good season for the girls of Crockett.
