Lady Blazers split conference contests

After a tough start in the conference for Boone softball, the Lady Blazers have shifted momentum with a strong performance in the Eastman Invitational as well as a win over top conference team David Crockett last week.
The Blazers hoped to keep that momentum going against two of the conference’s best in Science Hill and Volunteer last week.
On April 21, the momentum the Lady Blazers have built over the past few weeks took a hit as they fell to Science Hill for the second time this season, 3-2.
Offense was difficult to come by for both teams, with Science Hill finally getting to Boone pitcher Jaclyn Jenkins in the third inning off of a Vanessa Elliot RBI.
A Boone error in the fourth would bring home another Science Hill run in the top of the fourth and the Lady Hilltoppers added their final score of the contest in the sixth inning following Boone’s efforts to finally get on the scoreboard in the fifth.
Trailing 3-1 in the home-half of the seventh inning, Boone nearly made the best of their last at bat.
The Lady Blazers opened the frame by putting two runners on with no outs. A Rhetta Persinger RBI followed with one out, but that would be as close as Boone would get as Science Hill recorded outs against the next two hitters to capture the contest.
Cloee Smith, who was in the circle for the Lady Hilltoppers, earned the win in a complete game. She allowed just five hits and walked three in the win.
Jaclyn Jenkins was nearly as good, allowing two earned runs on five hits and striking out 11.
The Lady Blazers responded a night later by avenging their loss to Science Hill in picking up a big win over Volunteer and one of the conference’s best pitchers, Morgan Marshall.
Despite another outstanding effort from Marshall, Jenkins was better.
The Blazer pitcher plated both of Boone’s RBIs in the win, bringing in two runs on a double in the sixth inning.
That would prove to be the difference as Jenkins allowed no runners to cross the plate in a complete game shutout.
The Blazers would capture the contest, 2-0.
Boone holds a 22-10 record overall and a 5-7 mark in the conference.
