Lady Blazers douse Crockett’s chance at first conference win

With 13 conference games played this season, only one remained for the Lady Blazers of Daniel Boone and Lady Pioneers of David Crockett.
The final conference contest pitted the two rivals against one another in Jonesborough on Feb. 7.
Boone, which had already beaten Crockett once this season relied heavily on the duo of junior Jenny Snyder who opened the contest with an offensive spurt, totaling 14 points in the first half and senior Jordan Bacon who finished with 16 points.
The Pioneers appeared on the verge of being run out of the gym after the Blazers totaled 17 first quarter points, to capture a 10 point advantage heading to the second.
The Pioneers opened the second on an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to just four points. Despite the effort, Crockett couldn’t remedy Snyder as the Blazers shook off the Pioneer run to finish the quarter ahead by 8.
The teams traded baskets to open the second half but Bacon used the long ball to finish off the Pioneers.
Bacon knocked down four three pointers in the contest, with her final three pointer coming in the fourth quarter to put the Blazers up 50-32.
Despite a final offensive burst by the Pioneers, Boone held on for the 59-44 win.
Snyder finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds to record a double-double. Bacon connected on 12 points from behind the arc to pace her 16 points in the game and Natalie Sheffey appeared near the top in almost every statistical category, finishing with seven points, 10 rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Crockett’s Sara Shipley finished with 20 points in the contest. Keri Blevins added 10 for the Lady Pioneers.
The Lady Blazers opened the week with a 61-55 win over Happy Valley before beating Crockett to finish the regular season at 17-9 overall and 9-5 in the conference.
The Lady Pioneers lost to Chuckey-Doak, 64-45, on Feb. 9 and finished off the regular season with a loss against West Greene, 68-52. The losses dropped Crockett to a record of 5-24 overall with a 0-14 conference mark.
Crockett will open the first round of the district tournament against the conference’s best team in undefeated Science Hill on Feb. 13 at 6 p.m.
Boone, who finished third in the Big 8, grabbed the three seed and will play on Feb. 14 against six seed Dobyns-Bennett at 7 p.m. The girl’s district tournament will be played at Sullivan Central High School.
