Hardee's Classic: David Crockett Pioneers bring in fifth straight win

It’s a victory David Crockett High School’s Pioneers are hoping is the first of many.
The team kicked off the new basketball season in style Saturday night with the conclusion of the Hardee’s Classic Tournament with a commanding victory — defeating Sullivan East 82-30.
The tournament, held at Crockett, started on Nov. 24 with Johnson County High, Sullivan East High, Unicoi County High, Hampton High, Volunteer High, Daniel Boone High, Christian Academy of Knoxville and David Crocket High.
At the Nov. 28 game – after wins placed them in the championship game – Crockett’s Pioneers won the tip off, but the ball flew out of bounds. The first score of the game came from the Sullivan East Patriots.
Pioneers’ Guard Josh Releford got things rolling in the right direction for Crockett with a deep three-pointer, but Sullivan East started the game on fire with an early 15-3 lead with 5:00 remaining in the first quarter.
Sullivan’s Garrett Johnson gave the team a total of three 3-pointers in the first three minutes of the game. A deep three-pointer from Patrick Good with a foul gave Crockett a four-point play bringing the team back within single digits, 18-10.
Soon after, Good scored again, trimming the lead. The crowd went crazy as Crockett continue to attack the rim. The first quarter ended 21-18, with Patriots ahead.
Two back-to-back three-pointers from Crockett started the second half. The team now had the lead 23-21 as the quarter was winding down. Dustin Day gave Crockett a big spark in the paint while both teams were trading baskets in the final minutes of the second quarter.
Towards the end of the quarter, Crockett locked in defensively and scored big points on turnovers. The score was Crockett 40 to Sullivan East 32 going into halftime.
Sullivan’s Garrett Johnson led his team with 13 points in the first half.
Crockett’s Day scored eight points in the second quarter.
The second half of the game started off physical; both teams were sent to the foul line often. Neither team could make a run in the third quarter and the score stayed constant. It wasn’t until the last 3 minutes of the quarter that the Pioneers began to build on their lead. A deep three-pointer from Johnson was matched with a three-pointer from Good. Crockett ended the third quarter with their biggest lead of the game, 62-47.
The start of the fourth quarter did not look good for the Patriots, as they were unable to trim down Crockett’s lead. Half way into the final quarter,
Crockett was up by 20, 74-54 with four minutes remaining. The Patriots shot what they could, but it was not enough to withstand the attack from Crockett. They were defeated 82-50.
“We came out and we played our guts out,” said Sullivan East Head Coach John Dyer. “We came out and really played tough from the beginning, they just wore us down. They’re very strong at every position and their depth got us. I’m proud of my team . . . how hard we played and how tough we played.”
This win makes David Crockett the first team to win the Hardee’s Classic Tournament five times in a row.
“We’ve been down before,” said David Crockett Head Coach John Good. “The kids continued to fight back and everyone contributed.”
Good and Day combined for 48 points in the game. Good added 7 assists and Day added 7 rebounds.
“He’s (Day) the hardest worker I know,” said Good. “I love the way he hustles. He can score, he can play hard and I love it!”
