Good leads Pioneers to topple the Hill

What a difference a year makes. This time last season, current David Crockett Head Coach and former Science Hill assistant John Good was helping oversee a Hilltopper team that had not lost a league contest since 2009. His son Patrick, one of the area’s best young guards, promised a bright future for the team.
Fast forward a year later and the Good tandem now occupies the court in Jonesborough after Good left his assistant position at Science Hill for the head job at David Crockett. Together the father and son duo have guided the Pioneers to a 17-10 overall record and a 6-5 mark in conference play.
Given the standards at Science Hill, the Hilltoppers are not having the season they had hoped for, holding a 18-9 record overall and an 8-3 conference mark.
The Goods’ departure from Science Hill was met by some of the Hilltopper fan base with scrutiny, as John Good stood by his decision to bring his son with him to Crockett.
The culmination of everything that has transpired over the past year made Crockett’s 60-41 victory over Science Hill in Jonesborough on Friday night just that much sweeter.
Patrick Good scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Pioneers to the win in a game that is guaranteed to become one of the league’s newest rivalries following the events of the offseason.
In the contest, the Hilltoppers struggled to get on track in the first half, facing foul trouble and a loud and hungry Crockett crowd who had not witnessed a Pioneer win over Science Hill since the 1996-97 season.
Despite Crockett’s building a lead throughout the first half, it seemed evident that Science Hill would eventually make a run in the contest. But as the third quarter wound to a close, the Pioneers were relentless, putting together their best defensive effort of the season.
Crockett held a double-digit lead throughout the entire second half and Science Hill players couldn’t help their cause, shooting just 23 percent for the game.
Patrick Good closed the third quarter with a buzzer-beating three-pointer to elevate the Pioneer lead to 20 points.
As the fourth quarter got under way, it became apparent that the Science Hill run would never come, as the Pioneers allowed just 11 points in the fourth, coasting to a decisive 19-point victory.
With the win, Crockett broke the tie at the top of the conference standings, dropping the Hilltoppers a game back from first place Dobyns-Bennett.
Dustin Day joined Patrick Good in double-figure scoring, finishing with 14 points.
Tuesday’s winter weather postponed the Pioneers’ Jan. 28 contest against Volunteer. Crockett will enter the final week of the regular season with three games in three days. They met West Greene on Feb. 3, will host Happy Valley on Feb. 4 and then make up their contest against Volunteer on Feb. 5. They will close out the regular season on Feb. 7 at Chuckey-Doak.
