Girls on the Run to host 5K on May 20

Girls on the Run will host a 5K run on Sunday, May 20, at 2 p.m. on Milligan College campus.
Online registration is now open and will close on May 17. Registration will also be available on race day. The event is untimed, but it is expected to last two hours.
Girls in grades 3-8 from 20 different schools in the five surrounding counties will complete a non-competitive race.
Their family, peers, and community are also asked to join. Training for the race is combined with a 24-week curriculum the girls complete twice a week that started in February.
Curriculum topics include dealing with bullying, using media properly, developing self-confidence, and identifying each girl’s unique gifts.
“We want to empower the girls with a positive body image so that they can be successful in other ways,” said Northeastern Tennessee GOTR Council Director Jessica Thomas. “We believe that as girls run, their body image soars—along with their inspiration for making good achievements in life.”
The girls also compete to bring as many people as possible to participate in the run. The winning team receives a pink bedazzled shoe trophy.
Registration is $20 dollars until May 4, $25 thereafter. A T-shirt is guaranteed for runners registered by May 4.
