On Sunday, Dec. 5, Girls on the Run of Northeast Tennessee will host the third annual New Balance Girls on the Run 5K at the Veterans Affairs Medical Campus in Johnson City.
More than 450 runners will start the 3.1 mile course at 2 p.m. at Carl A. Jones Hall on Dogwood Avenue.
This non-competitive race is the culminating event for participants in our fall program, said Robin Hartley, race director. Its amazing to watch the girls cross the finish line and see the sense of pride and accomplishment reflected on their faces.
Girls on the Run is a nonprofit character development program for girls between the ages of 8 and 13 that uses running to teach the principles of self-respect and healthy living. The 12-week program combines physical training for a 5K with uplifting lessons that encourage positive social and emotional development.
The race is open to the public for a $20 registration fee to benefit Girls on the Run. Online registration is open until 9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3, or runners can register at the event on race day.
