ETSU golf club brings home national honors

Members of the Golf Club at East Tennessee State University recently brought home national championship honors from the National Collegiate Club Golf Association.
The ETSU club won the Spring Nationals competition, which had teams from The Ohio State University, Penn State, Eastern Carolina University, University of North Carolina-Wilmington, Virginia Tech, University of South Carolina, University of Virginia, Towson University and the University of Delaware participating.
After the first day of the competition, ETSU was down 13 strokes to East Carolina but came back on the second day and shot 366 as a team to win the tournament by five strokes.
ETSU team member Matt Smith won the individual national competition with a one under total of 139.
He and Wil Jarnagin claimed All-Tournament Team and All-American honors.
ETSU qualified for the Spring Nationals as number 1 seed after winning by 67 strokes in a tournament in late March sponsored by the University of Tennessee.
Smith was the individual champion with a score of 143.
Team members Ben Treadway, Matt Bowers, and Darius Hoese, along with Smith and Jarnagin, were named to the All-American team.
Earlier in the spring semester, the ETSU Golf Club hosted a tournament at the Johnson City Country Club.
Competing against universities from Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Kentucky, the ETSU group won the two-day tournament by 79 strokes.
Jarnagin was the individual stroke play champion.
He, along with Justin Clevenstine, Hoese, Treadway, and Smith, made the All-Tournament team.
