David Crockett athletic director Josh Kite announced the hiring of new volleyball coach Jill Daves on Wednesday. Daves will replace Sarah Webb who resigned in April.
Daves is a native of Jonesboro, Arkansas and smiled when she mentioned how ironic it was that she would be returning to a town of that name.
“I am from Jonesboro, Arkansas, so I told my husband this is a sign,” she told the Herald and Tribune. “I fell in love with the Jonesborough area, I love the town and everyone is just so nice.”
She comes from Carver Middle School in Spartanburg, South Carolina where she turned around a team that had three wins the year before she took over and helped them to 12 wins and a second round playoff appearance. Before that she was an assistant coach at Nettleton Public School in Jonesboro, Arkansas where she won a state championship. She also won a state championship as a player at Valley View High School in Jonesboro.
While in high school, Daves was a two-sport athlete in basketball and volleyball and she continued that at the NAIA level at Williams Baptist.
Daves — who will serve as an instructional assistant at David Crockett— said that she has yet to meet a player from David Crockett and she likes it that way, noting that she has asked people not to tell her anything about the girls until she sees them tryout next week.
“I’ve told everybody not to tell me one thing,” she said. “I don’t want to know anything about them, I want to make my own judgment. Tryouts is the first time that I will see any faces.”
David Crockett athletic director Josh Kite said that he happy to add Daves as one of his coaches.
“Jill is an excellent coach with experience and knowledge,” he said. “She knows how to win and understands productivity. She has a proven track record and I have no doubt she will continue her success at Crockett.”
Daves replaces Sarah Webb, who resigned in April. Tryouts for the volleyball team will be held on June 7, 8 and 9.
