Crockett takes down Boone in final regular season matchup

This year’s high school basketball regular season is in the books for the Pioneers of David Crockett and the Trailblazers of Daniel Boone.
The final week of the regular season saw the two rivals meet in Jonesborough to close out conference play on Feb. 7.
Despite their recent struggles down the stretch, including an 85-75 loss in double overtime to Boone on Jan. 10, the Pioneers used a quick start and the always important home court advantage to secure their 14th win of the season in a 59-49 victory over Boone.
The Pioneers exploded on offense to open the contest, reeling off 20 first quarter points to capture a seven-point lead after eight minutes of play.
The Pioneers increased their advantage in the second quarter, continuing to click on all cylinders offensively, taking a 38-23 advantage to intermission.
The margin of loss for Boone could have been worse had it not been for the sharpshooting of Dillon Reppart, who connected on a trio first-half three pointers.
The second half gave way to better defense by both teams as Crockett continued to increase their advantage, eventually pushing their lead to 20 points.
But Boone would battle back in the final minutes of the third to keep the deficit at 16 points entering the fourth.
The Blazers opened the final eight minutes in desperation mode, cutting the lead back to single digits at 53-44.
Boone continued to trim Crockett’s advantage in the final minutes of the quarter, eventually trailing by only six points, but the Trailblazers couldn’t knock down several big shots in the final minute and were forced to send Crockett to the line to prolong the contest.
The Pioneers answered at the charity stripe connecting on their final four shots to capture the 59-49 victory.
The win marked Crockett’s second of the season between the rivals with the first coming at the Hardees Classic in a Black Friday thriller where the Pioneers won on their home floor 51-50.
Boone’s Reppart added scored 20 points and Chris Jones added 10 for the Blazers. Crockett was led by Joe Ganger, who finished with a team high 17 points.
The Blazers preceded their loss against Crockett with a 64-53 loss to Happy Valley on Feb. 6 to open the week.
The Pioneers finished the season 9-19 overall, with a conference mark of 4-10. Boone will enter the district tournament as the sixth seed playing against the three seed Sullivan South on Feb. 16.
The Pioneers followed their win over the Blazers with a 47-40 win over Chuckey-Doak and a 60-38 win against West Greene.
The Pioneers finished the season 16-13 overall with a 6-8 conference mark.
Crockett will open the district tournament as the five seed against four seed Tennessee High on Feb. 15.
All games will be played at Sullivan Central with Crockett and Boone both taking the court at 7:30 p.m. on their respective dates.
