Crockett defeats University High, loses close one against Volunteer

The David Crockett High School boys’ basketball team saw both victory and defeat during basketball action last week.
On Thursday, the Pioneers traveled to University High where they handily defeated the Junior Bucs 61-48.
Crockett senior Joe Ganger racked up 21 points to lead the offensive onslaught. Junior Sam Tarlton finished the night with 15 points. Senior Clinton Freeman earned 11 points.
The first quarter of play was a well-played competition that left the game knotted at 13, however Crockett scored 18 points to UH’s 13 in the second quarter, putting the Pioneers on top 31-26 at the half. UH outscored Crockett in the third quarter, posting 16 points to the Pioneers’ 14. But it was all Crockett in the final quarter of play, where the Pioneers recorded 16 points compared to only 6 from UH.
Crockett started out the week of competition on Jan. 19 with a 57-41 loss to Dobyns-Bennett. Then, on Friday, the Pioneers suffered a heartbreaking loss to Volunteer, losing by 2 points.
Crockett looked like the stronger team in the first quarter of play, scoring double that of its opponent and earning a 16-8 lead. Volunteer came back in the second quarter, scoring 16 points to Crockett’s 10. The score was 26-24 in the Pioneers’ favor at the half. Neither team hit double digit scoring in the third quarter and at the start of the fourth quarter Crockett was losing, 33-32.
The Pioneers stayed with Volunteer in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t outscore the Falcons, who earned a 47-45 win.
