Crockett defeats Boone in thrilling contest

The Pioneers of David Crockett and Trailblazers of Daniel Boone met for the second and final time of the regular season in Jonesborough on Jan. 14 and once again reminded all in attendance why the two schools make up one of the best rivalries in Northeast Tennessee sports.
The Pioneers eventually took control of the back-and-forth contest, winning 73-64, but the final score only came after multiple lead changes and two gigantic individual performances.
Crockett’s Patrick Good poured in 30 points to pace the Pioneers in the contest, and Dillon Reppart guided the Blazers with 23.
In front of a near capacity crowd, the visiting Blazers stole the momentum early, eventually taking a 19-14 advantage after the first quarter.
Boone kept their foot on the gas in the second, stretching their advantage over the Pioneers to eight points by the half, 36-28.
The third quarter would be a game changer as Patrick Good took over for Crockett. Boone players didn’t have an answer and watched their first half lead slip away by quarter’s end.
Around the four-minute mark of the quarter, Good sank two baskets for a five-point spurt to give Crockett their first lead since early in the first quarter, 42-41.
Boone moved ahead again as the teams swapped leads over the final three minutes of the third, but a Good three-pointer at the buzzer put the Pioneers in front 51-50 heading to the fourth.
The rivals continued switching leads throughout the fourth quarter until an Isaac Barkley three-pointer put the Pioneers up for good 63-60 with three minutes remaining.
Dustin Day sealed it with free throws. He finished with 17 points and a clutch 9-for-10 effort at the charity stripe.
The Pioneers outscored the Blazers 45-28 over the final two quarters with Good putting up 19 of his 30 points in the second half.
The Pioneers added another win to their conference resume on Jan. 17 with a 75-63 win over Sullivan Central to close out the week. Crockett is now 15-8 on the season with a 5-3 mark in the Big 7.
The Blazers also added a conference win to close out the week with a 57-45 win over Volunteer.
After scoring just one point in the second quarter, the Blazers were down by 14 at the half, before charging back over the final two quarters to capture the win.
Reppart guided the Blazers with a game high 23 points.
With the win, Boone improved their record to 13-10 overall with a conference mark of 3-4.
The Blazers have just one game on their slate for next week, a big one in Gray against Science Hill on Jan. 21.
Crockett will open the week on Jan. 21 at Tennessee High and conclude it in Jonesborough against Dobyns-Bennett on Jan. 24.
