Canonizado earns second state championship

David Crockett High School’s Megan Canonizado captured her second state wrestling championship in as many years over the weekend in Franklin.
Canonizado, who wrestles at the 165-pound weight class, was Crockett’s first-ever state champion in wrestling last season.
Joining Canonizado in Franklin for the TSSAA State Tournament this year was teammate Jeremiah Rogers.
Rogers, a 160-pound senior, finished last week’s regional tournament with a second place finish, losing to Science Hill’s Justin Snyder in the championship bout.
Rogers lost in the opening round of the state tournament to Dylan Davis and faltered in the consolation bracket to Jacob Myers.
Rogers finishes his career at Crockett with over 100 wins.
Also wrestling in the state tournament from Washington County, was Daniel Boone High School’s Adam Whitfield.
Whitfield, a 126-pound senior, finished the region tournament in second place, losing to Science Hill’s Cole Schurlknight in the championship.
Whitfield lost in the opening round in Franklin 7-6 to Tyler Kimble.
He opened the consolation bracket with a pin over Alaa Shihadeh, before falling a round later to Soddy Daisy’s Josh Deckelman.
Canonizado, a junior, opened the state tournament with a pin over Laurel Bise in the semifinals match.
She defeated Science Hill’s Laura Trent for the championship.
