Boone soccer takes down UH

After opening the women’s soccer season on Aug. 20 with a 5-0 loss to perennial powerhouse Dobyns-Bennett High School, the Lady Blazers of Daniel Boone High School have won three straight contests.
Boone’s most recent win came against University High on Aug. 29 after coming from behind in the second half to notch the 2-1 victory.
“University was moving the ball very well and giving us a lot of trouble defensively early on,” Boone Head Coach Steve Sessis said. “Eventually, we were able to settle down, our defense stiffened and we came away with a victory against a pretty good team.”
The Junior Bucs broke through the Blazer defense with 7 minutes remaining in the opening half to take a 1-0 lead. But a refocused Boone came out in the second energized by their defense.
Katelyn Cox notched the Blazers first goal of the game at the 58-minute mark to tie the contest at 1-1. An Alex Drumwright goal followed at 63 minutes to give the Lady Blazers the lead for good.
Four games into the season, Sessis acknowledged that his Blazers are slow starters.
“If we could get by the first 20 minutes then we are a pretty good team,” Sessis said. “It just happens to be the personality of this team that they have to settle down to play well.”
After opening the season with the loss at D-B, the Lady Blazers found victory on Aug. 22 with a 5-0 win over Cherokee. Boone followed that with a 5-1 win on the road against Cocke County on Aug. 27 and then the victory over University High.
Unlike past seasons, the Lady Blazers lack a true superstar this year, but the roster is composed of talented veterans that play well together.
“This is not a team of standout performers. We have a very good spread of offensive weapons and take a journeyman approach to the game,” Sessis said. “It’s a good group of girls who are able to play well as a team. They are a very hard working group that has jelled together.”
Four games into the season, Sessis is pleased where his team is and confident about moving forward.
“If the first four games are any indication, I think we are going to have a successful season,” he said.
