Boone athletes compete in state, national events

Several Daniel Boone athletes who starred for the Blazers last year recently took their talents to a bigger stage.
Haley Wagner, fresh off her senior year in Gray, was a staple in Boone softball and golf over her high school career. Ultimately, she elected to attend Samford University in Birmingham, Ala., on a golf scholarship.
Wagner joined four other local golfers in qualifying for the Tennessee Women’s Amateur Championship held at Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville on June 18.
The other local golfers also qualifying for the event were former Science Hill golfers Madison Alexander and Allison Woodward, along with a pair of former Sullivan South golfers, Allyson Dunn and Lacie York.
Wagner would eventually fall 4-3 in the first round to Middle Tennessee’s Samantha Burrus. Dunn would be the only local golfer remaining after the competition’s first day, but qualifying for the event still remains a promising beginning to the collegiate careers for Wagner and the other local golfers.
Only a few days prior, current Boone runner Adam Barnard — just a month off a state championship in his junior season for the Blazers — competed at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, N.C.
The three-day competition was held on the campus of North Carolina A&T University and began on June 13.
Barnard ran to an impressive ninth-place finish in the top division 1-mile event, finishing with a time of 4:10.23.
The top time in the mile was held by Christian Alvarado of Fairfield Connecticut who finished the event at 4:06.88.
Christian Stumpf led several other Boone athletes at the national contest, placing second in the emerging high jump (6-5).
A team of Boone runners also finished 19th in the 4×200 relay with a time of 1:32.10.
The strong national performance caps off another impressive year for the Blazer track squad who collected several individual and team honors throughout the district, region and state meets during the postseason.
