New year brings on new challenges

A thank you to everyone that made the holidays and the end of 2019 very special. I always feel blessed to represent our town with my fellow board members during parades, the Lighting of the Christmas Tree and other events.

We began 2020 with a wonderful community celebration recognizing our partnership to build a new Jonesborough school and park facility with Jonesborough parents, county commissioners and school board members. We will now be shifting greater responsibility and duties to Town Administrator Bob Browning, our staff and the Design Committee to ensure we have a successful collaborative effort that produces a school design that invigorates our children and community.

This will be the most important project our town will embark on the next two years.

During my absence at our board’s January meeting, Vice Mayor Adam Dickson and Aldermen Virginia Causey, Stephen Callahan and Terry Countermine approved two of the town’s final design committee members:  Laura Christian Cusick and Bryan Barnett. We are excited they accepted this opportunity to make contributions to this community project. Also a thank you to Adam Dickson for effectively leading such a productive meeting.

Now our board faces several new challenges in 2020 that will test our preparation and foresight. We are expecting Town Administrator Bob Browning to shift his primary focus to leading the completion of the Jackson Theatre and the school and community park projects. We are excited he desires to lead these special projects that will positively impact Jonesborough all the years to come.

Other personnel challenges we expect in 2020 are hiring the best people to fill the big shoes of those that retire or take on new responsibilities. In many cases we can promote from within from our strong workforce or we consider the impressive talent we have throughout east Tennessee to fill these important positions. Rest assured that our board will make decisions that protect and enhance our town’s historic past, community relations, businesses and resident services. Please come attend our February 10th BMA meeting beginning at 7 p.m. at Town Hall. See you there or around town!
