Every day should be Veterans Day

We celebrated Veterans Day a few days ago, but I love our veterans 365 days a year.
I have a deep respect for all of our men and women in uniform, whether they are serving our country today or have served in years past.
I have been to many, many celebrations in honor of these very special people. But last week, the Jonesborough Visitors Center hosted a musical tribute to our veterans that was, without a doubt, the most moving, inspirational, spiritual, and patriotic tribute I have ever witnessed.
The music was provided by the Air National Guard Band of the Smoky Mountains from Knoxville. The conductor was outstanding as a military representative and as a musical director. The music was a beautiful blend of patriotic and traditional selections highlighted by a soulful solo of “I’m Proud to be an American,” another of “Someone to Watch Over Me,” and a lively, perfectly delivered rendition of “Bugler’s Holiday.”
“America the Beautiful” was played while a narrator delivered a message about what America really stands for…a message that brought tears to many eyes.
Another highlight was the folding of the American flag with the narrator explaining what each fold of the flag represents.
I couldn’t help but think about those principles our country was founded on and how they were preserved in this reverent ceremony.
From the Presentation of the Colors by the Tennessee State Patrol Honor Guard and the Daniel Boone High School Marine Junior ROTC, to the program of acknowledgments, presentations and announcements, to the Retiring of the Colors, it was an outstanding evening.
The Jonesborough Veterans Affairs Committee is to be commended for putting on a positively excellent program. I’m not sure how they are going to top this one next year, but I’m already looking forward to it.
If you know a veteran — and we all do — give him or her a handshake or a hug.
It shouldn’t have to be Veterans Day for us to tell them how much we appreciate them.
