William Evaul

William “Bill” Evaul, 67, of Raleigh, NC, died December 20, 2012 at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Bill was born in San Jose, CA on May 7, 1945. Being a history buff, he would tell his students it was the day the Germans surrendered in World War II. He spent many of his early years in South America with his parents who were missionaries with the Presbyterian Church. He returned to the states in 1961 and graduated from Menaul School, Albuquerque, NM, in 1963. Bill graduated from Maryville College, Maryville, TN in 1967.
Bill taught for one year at Washington College Academy in TN. He enlisted in the Air Force the next year, where he served for four years. He married Judy Edwards of Telford, TN in 1972, whom he had met at Washington College Academy. They celebrated 40 years of marriage this past year.
After leaving the military, Bill was a manager for several years with B. Dalton Booksellers in NC and MD. He loved teaching and took it up again in 1985. He was the proverbial “Renaissance man,” being certified in English, history, math, and physical science. He also taught Spanish for 3 semesters and enjoyed speaking Spanish with whomever he could. He taught for 27 years.
Bill was an avid soccer and track athlete in college. He coached men’s and women’s soccer and track for 20 years in four NC schools, starting two soccer programs. When Bill moved to Garner Magnet High School in 2008, he drove the activity bus for soccer and lacrosse until he retired.
He was a life-time member of the Presbyterian church and enjoyed teaching Sunday School and Bible studies.
Bill is survived by his wife Judy of Raleigh, NC, his son Mark (Katharine) Evaul and two grandsons William “Liam” Warren and Victor “Tory” Owen Evaul of Durham, NC, his mother Margaret Evaul of Newland, NC, his older sister Phyllis (Stan) Mills of Crossnore, NC; and five younger siblings Robert “Bob” (Carol) Evaul of Mulberry Grove, IL, Thomas “Tom” (Teddy Lou) Evaul of Newland, NC, Becky (John) Crenshaw of Linville Falls, NC and Philip (Melinda) Evaul of Sale Creek, TN as well as several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. His father Philip Evaul preceded him in death in 2000.
Bill’s family will hold a memorial service to celebrate his life on January 19, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Spruce Pine, NC.
