Richard Speirs

Richard Leslie Speirs, age 84, of 703 W. Main Street, Jonesborough, TN, passed away on Thursday, March 29, 2012, at Four Oaks Health Care Center.
Mr. Speirs is a native of Braxton County, West Virginia, and the son of the late William Matthew and Jona Lee Herald Speirs. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. Richard worked as a commercial painter and was of the Baptist Faith.
Other than his parents, Mr. Speirs is preceded in death by sisters, Mildred Ewell and Kitty Sparks; and a brother, Jack Speirs.
He leaves behind: Wife: Geraldine Merritt Speirs, of Jonesborough; Daughters: Claudia Randolph and husband, Johnny, of Jonesborough, Sheryl Wiatt of Newport News, Virginia; Grandchildren: Sasha Jones, of Newport News, Virginia, Micah Jones and wife, Kim, of Gloucester, Virginia, Dana Sperlein, of Middlesex County, Virginia, Christy and her husband, Dr. Jay Sleesman, of Portland, Oregon, Bobby Wiatt, of Newport News, Virginia; Great Grandchildren: Steven Treckey, of Topping, Virginia, Billy Langford, of Virginia; Nephews: Roy Sparks and wife, Charlotte, of Delaware; Special Friends: Lester Bailey, Virgil Moore, Mae Valentine, Jim Long, Gwynne Hughes; and Special Four Oaks Nurse, Kathy Proffitt; His favorite pet, “Yours” the cat.
The family would like to extend their thanks to the administration and staff of Four Oaks Nursing Home and Caris Hospice for their care and support.
A memorial service was held on Sunday, April 1, 2012, in the Chapel of Valley Funeral Home.
