Clyde Powell

Clyde W. Powell, age 92, graduated to his heavenly home Friday, July 13, at Four Oaks Healthcare Center, Jonesborough, after a lengthy illness.
Clyde was born in Wadsworth, Ohio, but had lived in East Tennessee since 1977. He was born to Charles and Lena Powell on Feb. 2, 1920.
Clyde married his first wife, Virginia, in 1941. He then served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Virginia passed away shortly after his return; however, she gave birth to Clyde’s only child, Bill, in 1943.
Marguerite became Clyde’s second wife in 1947; she was a loving wife to him and stepmother to Bill for 44 years before passing away in 1991.
Clyde and Marguerite served as missionaries in Vietnam from 1952-1958.
After retiring from Chrysler Air Temp in Dayton, Ohio, in 1977, Clyde and Marguerite moved to Roan Mountain and began a ministry to pastors and missionaries called Chalet Retreat.
In 1992, he married Marie who served at the Chalet tirelessly alongside Clyde until her death in 2009.
Clyde then moved to Piney Flats to live near his family.
Clyde is survived by his son, Bill (Elayne); granddaughter, Gini; grandson, Rick (Annie); great-granddaughters Anabelle, Vera and Kimber Powell; and sister, Edna Pifer. Nieces and nephews also survive.
A Memorial Service for Clyde will be held at Memorial Presbyterian Church, of which he was an elder, on July 20 at 7 p.m., with Rev. Dwight Basham officiating.
Receiving of friends will be at 6 p.m. at the church.
It was Clyde’s wish to be cremated.
