Anne Elizabeth Cosgrove Shaw

Anne Elizabeth Cosgrove Shaw, age 91, departed this life on November 4, 2012, at Life Care Center in Gray.
She was born in Elgin, Illinois, on July 2, 1921. Anne was preceded in death by her husband, Emory Preston Shaw; son, Daniel Shaw; parents, Charles and Mayme Kelley Cosgrove; sisters, Patricia C. Altwies and Norma Cosgrove; and brother, Philip Cosgrove.
She is survived by her sons, Michael P. Shaw (Carole) of Bristol, Va., and Timothy W. Shaw (Chris Skalko) of Gray, and grandchildren, Benjamin Shaw (Danielle), Joseph Shaw, Kelly Sentell (Gregg), and Morgan Shaw. She is also survived by two great-granddaughters, Emily Shaw and Hadley Sentell, several nieces and nephews.
During WWII, while attending Northern Illinois Teachers’ College, she was selected as one of 250 women from across the nation to be trained as engineers.
She graduated from Purdue University and worked at Curtiss-Wright, where she acquired two patents, until the end of the war. After marrying and having three sons, she worked for a local engineering firm and contributed greatly to the design of many buildings in Northeast Tennessee. Anne’s joy of learning did not stop with retirement. She used her brain and her heart to learn more about this region and its genealogy, becoming a favorite researcher at Jonesborough Public Library and an initial inductee of the Hall of Fame for the Washington County Genealogical Society.
One of her proudest achievements was the creation of a map of Jonesborough as it would have been in the 1800s. Anne once said, “It’s the little things people do that show the true person they are.”
Anne was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and she was kind and generous to those in need. She was a faithful member at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Johnson City and previously attended St. Dominic’s in Kingsport.
Funeral services for Mrs. Shaw will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 6, 2012, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Johnson City. The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on November 6, 2012.
A private committal and burial will be held at Oak Hill Memorial Park in Kingsport on Wednesday, November 7, 2012.
Those wishing to honor Mrs. Anne Shaw may make contributions to the Jonesborough Public Library or the Washington County Genealogical Society.
