JONESBOROUGH – Leap year gives you one additional day to pay your 2019 county property taxes, and the Washington County Trustee’s Office is accommodating that extra day by opening on a Saturday.
“Since the 29th falls on a Saturday, our office in the Historic Courthouse in Jonesborough will be open to take payments,” Washington County Trustee Rick Storey said.
Only the Jonesborough Trustee’s Office will be open from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 29. The last day you can make payments at the Trustee’s Johnson City location, at 378 Marketplace Blvd., is Friday, Feb. 28, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
“We are always very busy the last week of February with folks paying their property taxes at our windows or processing the payments received through the mail,” Storey said. “As long as your property taxes are postmarked by the end of February, there is no penalty.”
Property taxes not paid by Feb. 29 are subject to 1.5% interest applied each month on the unpaid balance. Properties with tax delinquencies for more than a year are sold by the county during the Delinquent Tax Sale in order to collect those back taxes.
