Town may create industrial park

Town officials are in discussion with the Washington County Economic Development Board on a possible new industrial park in Jonesborough.
“The EDB decided to take the initiative,” said Mayor Kelly Wolfe about the town’s being approached with the idea. “If you never think about things, they’ll never happen.”
Wolfe said the EDB has a prospect to locate in the park, but declined to provide the name of the possible new tenant or the location being considered for the industrial park.
“This is something they hit us with out of the blue,” he said. “There is no commitment on anything.”
Town Administrator Bob Browning agreed that talks are in the preliminary stages.
“To be specific would not be fair,” he said. “We’re in the very early discussions.”
Browning said he thinks the county would also be involved if the project is confirmed.
As far as whether there is a need for a new industrial park, Wolfe said an assessment would be required if talks progress.
“It wouldn’t have to be limited to industry. We could benefit from management or technology companies also,” he said. “Anything that would bring jobs to Jonesborough. For us as a region, diversity of industry is key to success.”
