The search is on: List of 20 candidates for Washington County Director of Schools released

A list of 20 potential candidates has been gathered for the Washington County Director of Schools job that will open when Ron Dykes leaves the position on June 30. Dykes announced his retirement from the position that has held for almost eight years, last May.
That list, provided to the Herald and Tribune from Dr. Tammy Grissom, Executive Director of the Tennessee School Boards Association, will be dwindled down to five during the school board's March 3 meeting. A decision on the director will be made at a special called meeting on March 29 or, if a consensus can’t be met, they will decide during the April school board meeting.
The candidates will then be in town for a full day of interviews and meetings on separate days which will begin on March 14 and go through the 18th.
Local names that were on the list include Dr. William Flanary, who is currently the Assistant Director of Schools in Washington County; Ginger Christian, RTI Curriculum Supervisor for the Washington County Department of Education and an adjunct professor at East Tennessee State University; Jarrod G. Adams, Supervisor of special education for the Washington County school system; Dixie Bowen, Supervisor of Student Services and Special Education for Bristol City Schools.
Other candidates from Tennessee include: William Childers Pelham, Elementary School; Michelle England Pineview Elementary School Principal; John Gunn, Mt. Pleasant Middle School Principal; Ronald Mackin, Principal Raleigh Egypt Middle School; Elizabeth Ferreira-Alves, Assistant Superintendent and Chief Academic Officer for Knox County Schools; Kimber Halliburton, Lead Principal/Principal of Waverly Belmont, Metro Nashville Public Schools.
But the position has also gained a lot of attention from out of state candidates as well, with eight applicants applying from outside of Tennessee. Those include: Joe Toomey, a principal at Clark-Shaw Magnet School in Alabama; David Thieman Steger School District Superintendent in Illinois; William Carter, Virtual Coordinator of Athens City Schools in Alabama; Donald Mathis, Superintendent of Schools. Conrad Public School District No. 1 in Montana; Michael Wheeling Jr., Director of Personnel and Supervisor of Secondary Education for Sagertown, Pennsylvania; Kim Barham, Assistant Superintendent for Twiggs County School System in Georgia; Paul Rockhold, Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at Heizer Middle School in New Mexico; Tawana Grover, Chief Human Resources Officer (aka Assistant Superintendent) in Desoto, Texas.
The brochure that was released states that that Washington County Board of Education is seeking “an experienced, highly qualified and visionary leader as its next Superintendent.”
