Some Jonesborough residents due for tax relief

With many people watching their budgets, a possible tax relief should be welcome news.
Jonesborough Town Recorder Abbey Miller wants area residents to know that some of them may be eligible for a property tax relief program mandated by the state.
The program is for people over 65, disabled homeowners, and/or totally disabled veterans or their widows, Miller said.
Total household income for those over 65 or disabled homeowners cannot exceed $26,830. The relief is partial and depends on the assessed value of a home.
If applying as a disabled veteran or a widow of one, there is no income limit and the relief is 100 percent.
People living within city limits are eligible for property tax relief on both city and county taxes, Miller said.
Those who think they qualify can visit Miller in the town office or go to the Washington County Trustee’s Office.
The deadline to apply is April 5, 2011.
Once initially qualified, the process is a lot simpler in following years, Miller said.
