New community event to bring films, cruise-ins to Courthouse Square starting in May

A series of free movie nights for local families will be hosted by the Jonesborough Area Merchants and Service Association beginning Saturday, May 14.
Movies on Main will be sponsored by The Lollipop Shop of Jonesborough, 123 E. Main St.
“The quickest way to get something done is to do it yourself,” said Jeff Gurley, one of the founding members of JAMSA and owner of The Lollipop Shop.
Gurley attended the April 11 meeting of the Jonesborough Board of Mayor and Aldermen, along with JAMSA Executive Director Diane Rowenhorst.
Following discussion, the BMA unanimously approved a special event permit to allow the new event to take place outdoors in downtown Jonesborough.
Gurley operated a store for four years in South Carolina in a town that hosted family movie nights and has also visited several other towns that host similar events.
“We thought this would be something good to start in Jonesborough,” he said.
Family movies will be played on an inflatable screen on courthouse square. The event will begin at dusk, approximately 8:30-9:30 p.m., and run every other week through Saturday, Sept. 17.
The Lollipop Shop will pay for the movie licensing rights and inflatable movie screen rentals at a cost of approximately $500 per showing.
In conjunction with Movies on Main, on select Saturdays, a local/regional car club will be invited to Jonesborough for a cruise-in between 5-8 p.m., with parking along courthouse square and immediately behind the courthouse.
“We believe the extra people in town will encourage non-restaurant businesses to stay open later,” Gurley said.
Movies on Main/Cruise-in follows JAMSA’s Taste of Jonesborough event held last month.
According to Gurley, JAMSA is in the process of developing more local and regional attractions and events between April and December to generate additional traffic to Jonesborough.
