McKinney Center gets ready for spring classes

Jonesborough’s Mary B. Martin Program for the Arts at the McKinney Center at Booker T. Washington School will be accepting registrations for all ages through Friday, Dec. 19, for its Spring Education Classes that will begin Jan. 26 and continue through April 19, 2015.
The spring series will include nearly 30 classes as part of the growing arts programs in Jonesborough.
Due to popularity and high demand, a maximum number of students have been placed in numerous classes to ensure the faculty is able to provide the individual attention for which Jonesborough’s Mary B. Martin Program for the Arts is known.
“The Art Adventures and Creative Constructions class is perfect for students who enjoy after school art programming, but also for families who homeschool,” said Director Theresa Hammons.
“This spring we will be expanding our homeschool elementary curriculum on Fridays. We can even personalize a homeschool class for your family or co-op.  Each class needs to have at least five students. Just call or email to set up a time that works for your group.”
Several classes have been added to the spring curriculum, such as “The Wheel Deal,” which offers a world of opportunity in ceramic construction.
“Charcoal Portraits from Photograph” is another new class that will explore portraiture using charcoal to learn skills in size, proportion, shading, highlighting, etc.
There have been several requests for the program to offer printmaking and in response, “Introduction to Printmaking” will be offered.
“Art on Fabric” is a “home” themed class that will use your favorite picture of the family home and turn it into a treasured scene.
Have you ever wondered what to do with your broken china? Create a unique wall plaque or frame in “Pique Assiette Mosaics” class.
Learn to bead weave in the new “Beginning Bead Weaving” class. “Theatre Dance” and “Baton Twirling” are additions to the dance curriculum, and “The Radiant Musical Performer” is a new class that explores the skills of the singer/actor. This class will be performing musical selections from “Wicked!”
Individual class costs vary.
