Local residents receive accounting scholarships

The Educational & Memorial Foundation of the Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants (TSCPA) recently awarded scholarships to 11 East Tennessee area residents for the 2011-12 academic year.
The recipients are: Tennessee Technological University student Britney N. Deckard, Jonesborough; East Tennessee State University students Savannah A. Perkins, Gray; Kristen N. Brooks, Church Hill; Andrew D. Clark, Joshua S. Culbert and Joshua S. Sorah, Johnson City; April R. Menya, Kingsport; and Ellen M. Shuck, Rogersville; King College student Angela M. McIntruff, Kingsport; and University of Tennessee students Jarrod C. Carter, Bulls Gap, and Rebecca L. Tompkins, Kingsport.
Clark received the Paul L. Royston Award, which is given annually to the top accounting student in Tennessee. Carter was awarded the Richard L. Townsend Award, which is given to a University of Tennessee student who is deemed by the committee to be the top student in the master’s program.
Clark and Carter will both be given a plaque in addition to the scholarship in recognition of their outstanding academic achievements.
A total of $150,000 in scholarships was awarded to students attending colleges or universities throughout Tennessee by TSCPA this year. The 150 recipients were chosen from 177 applicants.
In order to qualify for a TSCPA scholarship, candidates must complete introductory courses in accounting and/or be students majoring in accounting.
Scholarship recipients were selected on the basis of academic achievement, professor recommendation, leadership skills, financial need and previous receipt of a TSCPA scholarship.
