Kiwanis Spaghetti Dinner deemed huge success

At Jonesborough’s Annual Kiwanis Club Spaghetti Dinner, the sauce isn’t the only thing that seems to keep getting better and better.
“This year, the club broke all records,” said Ed Wolff, Jonesborough Kiwanis Club secretary. “Last year we had 725 customers. This year we had 917.”
The all-you-can-eat event, which was held Feb. 22 and featured the Kiwanis Club’s famous spaghetti sauce and noodles, salad, bread and dessert for the bargain rate of $8 each, has become something of the spring social event for Jonesborough.
“It’s the social event of the year,” Wolff said of the dinner’s appeal. “We chat with people as they go through, and they say, ‘It’s the one time I get to see everybody in town.’”
“And then there’s the sauce,” he added. “Customers say it’s one of the best spaghetti sauces they’ve ever had.”
More importantly, however, guests know the money is going to a good cause,
“This year we made $7,500 net,” Wolff said. “And all of that goes into our service projects, with 80-90 percent of it going to children.”
That’s vital to the group, he said, because “our motto is helping the world, one child at a time.”
Proceeds go to such projects as Court Appointed Special Advocacy for Children in Northeast Tennessee, Jonesborough Area Ministerial Alliance Food Bank, Boy Scouts, and the Boys & Girls Club.
Of course, the dinner doesn’t happen on its own, according to Wolff. It takes a supportive community and a group of dedicated volunteers to bring about each dinner.
“We get help from lots of people,” he said. “Food City either provides some of the food or they give us a discounted rate. Andrew Johnson Bank. Fosters Signs. Everyone helps.
“And when we get together – from the Kiwanis Club to the Builder Club to the Key Club — it’s the greatest teamwork I’ve ever seen.”
Next year, Wolff expects the dinner to be even more amazing,
“We’re already writing down ways we can do it even better next year,” he said.
