Jonesborough listed as ‘Top 10’ place to stroll

Historic Jonesborough was recently named one of the top 10 streets in the south to visit in an article written by Lena N. Katz for USA Today Travel.
Including the south’s traditional trademarks, USA Today’s top 10 selected towns are known for their “old-fashioned beauty and genteel charm; for graceful live oaks and drooping Spanish moss covering old stone and brick; for historic homes set on manicured grounds; for quaint shopping streets where women in petticoats and parasols wouldn’t look out of place wandering down the sidewalk.”
Special attention was placed on areas that took preservation seriously, creating a sense of place that locals and guests have flocked to for years. The article notes that their top 10 picks “are pretty enough to star in pictures, and tourist-friendly to boot.”
Main Street Historic Jonesborough is among noted towns including New Orleans; Alexandria, Va.; Savannah, Ga.; Rome, Ga.; Greeneville, S.C.; Aiken, S.C.; Houston; Naples, Fla.; and Eureka Springs, Ark. The article mentions Jonesborough’s trademark of “Storytelling Capital of the World,” southern folklore and dedication to history along Main Street.
“Lined with well-maintained old brick buildings that now house shops and restaurants, the street feels lively but not contrived.
“American icons like Andrew Jackson and Davy Crockett are still its most important citizens, and the 3-acre International Storytelling Center on Main Street is the heart of the town.
“On patriotic holidays, the town comes alive with big festivals and lots of red, white and blue decorations.”
Photos chosen by USA Today staff to represent Jonesborough include the Chester Inn Museum with Model T’s lined down Main Street by local photographer C. David Cook, and Equine Elegance’s horse and buggy dressed for the Annual Jonesborough Days Parade provided by the Jonesborough Department of Tourism.
