Jonesborough couple has areas first baby of new year

The first baby born in the new year in the area arrived at 12:44 a.m. on Jan. 1 in the Family Birth Center of Johnson City Medical Center.
Heather and Terry Smith, from Jonesborough, named their daughter Willow Rose after the movie, Willow.
Around the Mountain States Health Alliance system, it was a busy night for deliveries in its Family Birth Center.
Johnston Memorial Hos-pital in Abingdon, Va., had its first arrival at 12:49 a.m., just five minutes after JCMC. At 1:16 a.m., Franklin Woods Commu-nity Hospital, Johnson City, welcomed its first baby of 2011, while Norton Community Hospital, Norton, Va., had its first baby at 2:52 a.m.
Overnight, JCMC doctors and nurses delivered five babies with a sixth mother in labor in the afternoon of Jan. 1.
