Historic preservation takes center stage

The East Tennessee Historic Preservation Conference was held for the first time in Jonesborough last Friday and Saturday at the International Storytelling Center.
The meeting, co-sponsored by the Washington County Heritage Alliance, brought more than 60 preservationists from throughout the region to the state’s oldest town.
The theme for this year’s conference was, “Positioning Preservation for Prosperity.”
Sessions opened on Friday with a keynote address called, “Remembering What We Forgot: Conservation As Progress” by Dr. Carroll VanWest of Middle Tennessee State University.
Following two days filled with group sessions, the event concluded Saturday with Mary Ruffin Hanbury of Hanbury Preservation Consulting, of Raleigh, N.C., speaking on, “Relying On The Past To Plan For An Uncertain Future.”
