Eldridge chooses to leave post

Prior to the Sept. 8 meeting, Mayor Dan Eldridge announced he will not seek reappointment as chair of the Washington County Commission.
“I believe my role as mayor is being compromised by serving as chairman of the commission,” he said.
According to Eldridge, there are no real benefits to constituents for the mayor to serve as chair. He has spoken with several of his counterparts who do not fill that role in their counties.
“The amount of time required to chair the commission could be better spent pursuing new jobs and managing the budget,” he said.
“Since my term expired at the end of August, and I have no interest in continuing it, I will ask Commissioner Greg Matherly to chair the meeting,” Eldridge said in his closing comments as chair.
Matherly, who was elected vice chairman of the commission, called the meeting to order and presided throughout.
