Downtown Centre sells for $1 million

Closing papers signed Dec. 1 completed Washington County’s sale of the Downtown Centre for $1 million.
The facility was sold to the Johnson City Development Authority, which will invest another $1 million in renovations. Northeast State Community College has received approval for a lease between it and the JCDA to operate a satellite location in the former courthouse, and the agreement is now being executed by state officials.
Following a motion made by Commissioner Doyle Cloyd and seconded by Commissioner Mark Ferguson during the Nov. 28 meeting, the commission unanimously approved the resolution authorizing Mayor Dan Eldridge to facilitate the transaction.
Though much discussion has already taken place in committee meetings about how the proceeds could be used, members of the Oversight and Steering Committee will compile a prioritized list of county projects for review by the full commission.
The first meeting of the Oversight and Steering Committee will be held Dec. 8.
