The girls basketball team at David Crockett High School is without its head coach, Tony Gordon, after he was suspended on Feb. 4.
According to the letter of suspension from Director of Schools Bill Flanary, Gordon was suspended for having alcohol on campus, which is a violation of the school board’s ethics policy 5.611 and the Tennessee Teacher Code of Ethics.
The letter says that on Tuesday, Feb. 4, Gordon reported to school officials that he had alcohol bottles in a backpack as well as in his vehicle. The letter also said that the bottle of alcohol in the car on school premises was half empty.
Flanary said the school system is still investigating the situation, but had no further comment.
Gordon was named the head girls basketball coach on May 4, 2018 after serving as an assistant boys basketball coach at Crockett. He also previously coached at University High, Morristown West High School and Elizabethton High School.
The Lady Pioneers are currently in the Region 1-AAA tournament and are led by Crockett’s boys basketball coach, Cody Connell, on an interim basis. The girls will face Jefferson County on Friday.
