Boone, Crockett ROTCs take home honors

The Daniel Boone High School Marine Corps Junior ROTC unit took 1st place overall in the 9th Annual R-S Central Drill and Marksmanship Competition held in Rutherfordton, N.C., on Saturday, March 6.
The team brought home a total of 24 team and individual awards to top a field of 17 schools.
In armed Individual Drill Competition the following cadets took home awards: Megan Phillips, Chelsey Thompson, Thomas Basham, Joshua Cole, Kevin Phillips, William Bledsoe, Wilson Miller and Ryan Lovell.
In unarmed Individual Drill Competition the following cadets took home awards: Summer Donald, Megan Phillips, Christopher Rowe and Wesley Morefield.
The team took a total of six first place trophies, one second place trophy, one third place trophy and designation as best Marine Corps Unit.
Wesley Moore placed first and Wesley Morefield placed second in Individual Regulation Drill, Armed.
Tyler Cole placed fourth place in Marksmanship Kneeling Position category.
The Daniel Boone Drill Team regularly competes in armed and unarmed drill, personnel inspection, color guard, exhibition drill and individual precision military drill.
Unit commanders for this year’s team are Thomas Basham, Kevin Phillips, Samantha Gantt, William Bledsoe, Jamie Taylor, Tyler Cole, Joshua Cole and Jeremy Hartsock.
The David Crockett High School NJROTC rifle team finished in 12th place in the recent Navy NJROTC rifle championship at Camp Perry, Ohio.
The Crockett cadets had to compete against 450 teams nationwide to be amongst the top 23 teams shooting in Ohio.
This represents the top 1 percent of the rifle shooters in the nation. Matt Hawkins was the top shooter and was accompanied by Houston Kilby, Elaina Parks, Jesse Adams, and Megan Lockwood.
Of note, Houston Kilby received his Junior Distinguished Shooter Badge at the awards banquet, an honor earned by only about 30 shooters each year that recognizes exceptional shooting ability displayed in top competitions.
