BMA expected to approve seating, alcohol outdoors at restaurants

At its June 14 meeting, the Jonesborough Board of Mayor and Aldermen was expected to give final approval to an outdoor use area permit as well as an ordinance that would allow on-premise alcohol consumption in those areas.
Under the permit, the town would allow a Main Street business to use part of the town’s right-of-way for an outdoor seating area, which must be delineated somehow from the sidewalk. A town policy would also allow any restaurant or establishment holding an ABC license to sell alcohol for on-premise consumption in the outdoor area.
The Cranberry Thistle had submitted an application for an outdoor use permit to the town, for two tables and eight chairs, as well as a periodic hot dog cart. The BMA was expected to decide Monday.
The BMA was also expected to pass the second and final reading on the ordinance placing land near the Justice Center and Detention Center into the treatment facility overlay zone.
At last month’s meeting, the board was to take up offering a new lease for the campground caretaker log house to Jonesborough employee William Russell, as recommended by Operations Manager Craig Ford.
However, at the meeting, the BMA tabled the action to make sure all employees had an equal chance to submit their names for consideration for the lease. A notice was sent out to all departments and five applicants responded.
After an interview and questionnaire process, the recommendation from town staff is still for Russell, based on work ethic and longevity. The BMA was expected to make a final decision at its Monday meeting.
The board is expected to approve the hiring of a staff accountant at $31,818 annually. The new accountant, Sarah Byrd, would take some of Town Recorder Abbey Miller’s workload. The change is part of the Work task Analysis suggestion.
Another staff recommendation would be the hiring of a new Director of Tourism. The committee recommended Alicia Phelps, who is currently the Assistant to the Director of Public Relations at Emory & Henry College, at a salary of $35,079.
