BMA approves Senior Center architect

The Jonesborough Board of Mayor and Aldermen took another step forward on Monday, October 10, unanimously approving Ken Ross Architects as the proposed senior center project architectural firm .
And based on rhetoric between a delegation of attending Washington County commissioners and Mayor Kelly Wolfe, there may be a town-county partnership concerning that project in the making.
Washington County commissioners attending the meeting included newly-elected Chairman Greg Matherly, Mike Ford, Gerald Sparks and Mark Ferguson.
Wolfe welcomed the group and referenced plans for building a senior center.
“We appreciate you and we’re ready to work with you,” Wolfe said to the commissioners. “Thank you for being a good partner.”
Matherly responded, telling Wolfe that “our relationship with Jonesborough is one of mutual (interest) as well as partners. We make a good team.”
According to Town Administrator Bob Browning, Ken Ross Architects has been providing architectural services up to this point without a contract.
By approving the agreement, Jonesborough officially will move ahead with plans, as previously submitted, to build the new center near the historic district, just off East Main Street at the old city garage location.
The agreement allows for compensation to Ken Ross Architects in the amount of 5 percent of project costs.
Browning said the firm requested a percentage base compensation due to fluctuation of project costs. The key, he said, to staying within budget, “is to nail down the size of the project on the front end. “
According to Browning’s report to the BMA, the services from the firm will include a schematic design, design development, construction documents, bidding, and construction phase services. It will also include evaluation of work, certifying payment requests from contractor and reviewing shop drawing and submittals from the contractor.
Basic services also include structural, mechanical and electrical engineering services.
Additional duties covered under the agreement include site evaluation and planning, civil engineering, and landscape design, as well as detailed cost estimating.
