Arbor Day festivities scheduled for May 10-11

The third annual “From the Roots Up” celebration, in honor of Arbor Day, will take place May 10-11 in Jonesborough.
Hosted by the Town of Jonesborough and the Johnson City Power Board, festivities begin on Friday, May 10, with a tree planting at The McKinney Center at Booker T. Washington School at 10 a.m.
Free trees will be given away during the ceremony to those in attendance.
The event will also sponsor the Music on the Square concert later that evening.
The Arbor Day event will continue on Saturday, May 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with activities and vendors in downtown Jonesborough at the International Storytelling Center.
A variety of activities have been planned.
At 10 a.m., Pike Electric will present a program on trees and power lines.
The Miss Arbor Day Natural Beauty Pageant will begin at 11 a.m.
Photographs will be on display at the festival as part of a photography contest. Winners will be announced at 3 p.m.
At 1:30 p.m., Jonesborough’s four-legged furballs can get in on the action in a pet parade that begins at the ISC building.
Several demonstrations will also take place at the event, including chainsaw sculpting by Donna Nary.
Nary will showcase her talents in chainsaw sculpting and vernal wood carving at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. in front of the Christopher Taylor Cabin on Main Street.
Also on Saturday, the blues group After Six will perform in front of the ISC from noon to 4 p.m.
