‘School Board Appreciation Week’ set for Jan. 22-28

The Tennessee School Boards Association, school systems and communities across the state will recognize the work of boards of education Jan. 22-28 during School Board Appreciation Week.
Each year, “School Board Appreciation Week” is proclaimed by the governor and celebrated statewide to honor the school board members who govern our schools and make a difference in the lives of our children and communities. Public education is everyone’s business, and it holds the key to the success of every community.
School board members devote their time and efforts to ensure that our students receive a first-class education and an opportunity for future success in life. School Board Appreciation Week is a chance for the community to thank these individuals for their commitment to our children and their education.
“School Board members play a vital role supporting public education,” said Bob Alvey, TSBA 2012 president and Jackson-Madison School Board member. “The role of a school board member is to ensure that there is strong policy in place to guide a school district, as well as be a link to the community to ensure that the entire community at large supports our local public schools.
“I want to thank each school board member for their vital service to their community, and recognize their contributions to their communities during this week that honors the service of school board members nationally.”
Gov. Bill Haslam signed a 2012 proclamation for School Board Week. Citizens are encouraged to show school board members appreciation. School board members’ actions and decisions affect the present and future lives of children.
School Board Week in Tennessee is part of National School Board Recognition Month, which highlights school board members across the nation throughout the month of January.
The Tennessee School Boards Association, a statewide nonprofit organization, is a federation of the state’s local school boards. The mission of the Tennessee School Boards Association is to assist school boards in effectively governing school districts.
Through the years, TSBA has helped school boards and their members reach their highest potential through association programs, meetings and services. TSBA also provides school board members a collective voice in matters of legislation and public education concerns.
