Seminars to focus on end-of-life issues

Many of us have difficulty dealing with the complexities of end-of-life issues. The Jonesborough Senior Center is hoping to assist folks in making such decisions centered on a variety of topics including planning, legalities, grief and enjoying life through free seminars being offered March 31 – April 28.
Zel Hester, advisory board member of the Jonesborough Senior Center, recognized the need for this program because of her personal experiences dealing with her own family and through her work as chaplain at a local hospital.
“Most of us just don’t look forward to dealing with this very tough subject, but we can’t avoid it,” Hester said.
The Jonesborough Senior Center will kick off the series on Tuesday, March 31, and will host a specific topic each week.
“Our hope is to provide a comfortable and sensitive environment to discuss these important issues that we all need to consider regardless of age, so we welcome anyone in our community to come and participate,” Jonesborough Senior Center Program Director Marcia Rountree said.
Douglas Fox, Spiritual and Pastor Care Department staff member at Johnson City Medical Center, has seen the effects of no planning on family members and friends, and hopes that his participation in the workshops will assist folks who have questions or are thinking about their final arrangements.
This program is developed to help with the practical issues that many of us face at the end of our lives, such as grief and loss, funeral planning and legal preparations. Each session will be hosted by a professional specializing in the weekly topic, with time for discussion and additional materials for study. The sessions are geared for any age group ranging from families with older relatives to senior citizens.
