Satisfy your sweet tooth at next cash mob

Ever since Sarah Jessica Parker, portraying Carrie Bradshaw, sank her teeth into a cupcake from Manhattan’s Magnolia Bakery nearly 10 years ago on the TV series “Sex and the City,” cupcakes have taken the country over, one sweet tooth at a time.
Despite the recession, people are still going crazy over cupcakes in towns nationwide. Jonesborough is no different, playing home to one of the area’s fastest growing bakeries – The Crazy Cupcake.
Who would have thought that cupcakes would come in flavors such as pumpkin, carrot, apple, pecan or red velvet? The Crazy Cupcake owners DJ and Allison Winfield did. And their crazy ideas have proven to be winners.
The couple takes a different approach to cupcakes by combining favorite foods and transforming them into their very own crazy cupcake. Other flavors include cinnamonster, s’mores, choco-latte and pinkie. In fact, the small town bakery stays busy with more than 60 varieties of cupcakes and close to 10 featured each day, including seasonal flavors.
“We like coming up with new flavors and experimenting with stuff,” said DJ Winfield. “We’ll pull a lot of ideas from cooking, reading food magazines and watching television.”
Following their motto, “cupcakes are not just for dessert anymore,” the couple creates a variety of cupcake flavors based on trends, movies and requests from customers.
Rounding out their second year in downtown Jonesborough, the gourmet cupcake bakery has created such a following that their endeavor was recently named Best Bakery and Dessert by Out ‘N About magazine.
“We would love to watch Cupcake Wars, and one day I said, ‘Hey I can do that!’ So, we just went with it,” DJ said. “Allison has always been really good at baking and I ended up teaching myself how to bake. Next we just started testing it out on neighbors, and they loved it.”
The couple and their five children were already Jonesborough residents, and after falling in love with the aesthetics of a building located on Main Street, a “For Rent” sign magically appeared in the storefront window one day.
“We went in with no ideas, but just loved that building and ended up signing the lease that very night,” DJ said. And soon thereafter, followed the craze known as The Crazy Cupcake.
What makes The Crazy Cupcake creations so good is the Winfields’ dedication to freshness. But that also makes their daily routine difficult.
“The hardest part is baking fresh daily, we can sometimes over-bake or under-bake quantities and we have to try to control our waste and keep costs down,” DJ said. “It’s hard to judge how many people will be in from one day to the next and we want to try to make sure everyone has a great experience and will come back and visit.”
With several plans in the works, including new flavors and bringing back its fall and Christmas themed buckets filled with mini cupcakes, the store shows no signs of slowing down.
“My favorite part is meeting all the new people and actually seeing the end result of our work,” DJ said. “It puts a smile on our faces to see how well our customers enjoy the creations.”
Prices range from $2.50 for regular cupcakes, $12 for a six-pack and $24 for a dozen. Mini cupcakes are available by pre-order for $9 a dozen.
The Crazy Cupcake will host the eighth cash mob in the ongoing We Dig Jonesborough campaign. It will take place on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 11 a.m. The bakery will offer a special discount of a dozen regular cupcakes for $20, plus tax. The cupcakes can be purchased that day or a gift certificate can be purchased to use at a later date.
The Crazy Cupcake is located at 135 E. Main St. For more information about the store and the stories behind the cupcakes, visit the-crazy-cupcake.com, call 913-4497 or email [email protected]
