Popular event to return with everything from watercolors to mosaics

Jonesborough’s much anticipated Juried Art Exhibition is close at hand. The show is one of the region’s premier exhibitions and is in its third year of being revived at the McKinney Center.
McKinney Center Director Theresa Hammons states, “Each year we see the exhibition grow. We have more artists submitting; the jurying process is becoming more selective and competitive. It gets better and better every year.”
Submissions to this year’s exhibition included watercolors, mosaics, jewelry, pottery, sculpture, photography and mixed media pieces.
The juror, William Eiland, director of the Georgia Museum of Art, is currently selecting the final works that will be presented in the exhibition.
“After the juror selects the works for the exhibit, my staff, volunteers and I make the labels, the program and hang the exhibition,” she says. “The juror will then come to the McKinney Center the day of the opening and choose the awards.
“Best in Show, Second, and Third places will be awarded, along with a few honorable mentions. We couldn’t do this without our sponsors and volunteers.”
This year the exhibit is sponsored by the East Tennessee Foundation and volunteers are assisting with the reception. Hammons also states that the exhibit is a great place to bring groups.
“The exhibit is open to the public,” Hammons says. “School groups, tour bus groups, families and individuals are welcome to come and enjoy the artwork at their leisure. Everyone is welcome here.”
The exhibit will open on Thursday, March 5. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. at the International Storytelling Center with a lecture from Eiland.
At 7 p.m. there will be a reception at the McKinney Center, and the awards will be presented. The lecture and reception are free and open to the public. The exhibit will also be open starting Friday, March 6, Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
