Deputies meet for ‘Prayer at the Pole’

Newly elected Sheriff Keith Sexton has started a monthly Prayer at the Pole at the Washington County Sheriff’s Office for anyone who wants to attend.

“It got started when I came in office because I’m a firm believer that nothing in this world just happens,” Sexton said. “Our country was founded on Christian values and that’s something you don’t see around the jail. I’m a believer in the ‘you never start the month off or day off without humbling yourself and going to God in prayer.’”

Sexton added that there were several members of the sheriff’s office that were interested in it, as well as community members.

“We gather around the flag pole to pray for the sheriff’s office, to pray for our country and the safety of each other,” he said. “It’s totally voluntary. We do it before work and it takes about 10 or 15 minutes and it’s just a good way to start the month off.” Prayer at the Pole takes place the first Monday of each month unless it falls on holiday, in which it will occur the following Monday.

“It’s just a good time of fellowship for our employees that are interested in participating,” Sexton explained. “We encourage anyone that would like to come. We have several pastors of churches, lay members, just anyone who is interested in gathering together with fellow believers and we say a prayer.”

Sexton said that his plan is to continue Prayer at the Pole as long as he is sheriff.

“We try to meet there at 7:45 a.m. on that Monday and we share it on different platforms,” he said. “We’ve had as many as 100 attend to 25 attending. We’ve included several bus crews that have shown interest. They were getting ready to get on their bus for the day, so we brought them over and let them participate too.

“You never go wrong trying to do good.”

The hope Sexton has for those that attend, is that when they leave the flag pole they recognize we all meet on level ground because we all answer to a higher power.
